Sports Mouthguards
Each year, countless dental and facial injuries occur due to sports-related trauma. While all sports carry some risk of oral injury, the likelihood is higher in recreational activities that involve frequent physical contact with other players or the ground, as well as the potential for being hit by objects like balls, bats, or sticks.
To significantly reduce the chances of damaging your teeth, cheeks, lips, tongue, face, or jaw from a sports-related injury, wearing a mouthguard is crucial. A mouthguard is a removable device made of durable plastic that fits comfortably over your teeth. Typically, mouthguards are designed to cover only the top teeth, but they can also be customized to include the lower teeth, depending on your specific needs. Individuals with braces or certain dental work may require a specialized mouthguard that offers more coverage.
There are three types of sports mouthguards available: pre-formed and ready-to-wear stock mouthguards, boil and bite mouthguards, and custom mouthguards created by your dentist. Our office will assist you in selecting the ideal sports mouthguard to protect your smile. While the first two options provide some level of protection, the most effective and comfortable mouthguards for safeguarding your smile are the ones individually designed and customized by your dentist.
